Which debts can go into an IVA?

Most unsecured debts can be included. Secured debts and certain priority debts cannot.

Usually included

Common unsecured debts

Credit & store cards

Balances on credit cards, store cards, and most catalogue accounts.

Personal loans & overdrafts

Unsecured personal loans, bank overdrafts, and payday loans.

Most HMRC debts

Income tax, self-assessment, VAT, and National Insurance arrears.

Utility & council arrears

Old utility arrears, mobile contracts and some council tax arrears (case-by-case).

Usually excluded

Debts that don't go in

Mortgages

Mortgages are secured against your home and can't be included.

Hire purchase / car finance

Goods you don't fully own yet are usually excluded.

Student loans

UK student loans are excluded from an IVA.

Court fines

Magistrates' court fines, child maintenance and certain priority debts are excluded.
